Glenelg captain Liam McBean hauled his team on to his back and carried it across the line for a heart-stopping three-point win against a feisty West Adelaide at Stratarama Stadium.
With his team outplayed by the Bloods for the majority of the contest, the Bays skipper stood tall in the final term when he kicked three of his five goals for the game to hold off the brave Bloods.
The rejuvanted Bloods, playing inspired footy under new coach Nathan Bassett, led from the 11th minute of the opening quarter and by as much as 27 points entering time-on of the second stanza.
But McBean stole the lead for his side with a 40m set shot in the 17th minute of the last term after earning a free kick in the ruck.
He was at it again just two minutes later when he slotted his set shot from inside the centre square, having snaffled a lovely pass on the lead from Remi Brown.
But this Bloods outfit is made of tough stuff as Tom Morrish kicked a checkside goal from 20m, to get back within a kick.
The Tigers’ No.5 missed a set shot in the 24th minute before seemingly giving his side the win after converting his chest mark from 45m outin the 26th minute.
This sparked Morrish into action as he streamed off half back to find teammate Hamish Ellem on the lead, Ellem’s set shot giving the visitors a pulse nearing 27 minutes played.
The Bloods then won the next centre clearance convincingly but as Joel Parker streamed towards goal to put his side in front, tenacious Tiger Paddy Parnell produced a game-saving tackle at half-back.
It ensured the ball would end up in the hands of Matt Allan, wo converted his set shot on a slight angle from 30m.
West’s Dylan White goaled on the run in reply though, forcing the ball back to the middle with West again within a goal.
But after just five seconds from the centre bounce the siren sounded on a highly-entertaining encounter, the Tigers claiming the premiership points.
McBean (five goals) from 18 disposals and 12 marks was sensational while sidekick Lachie Hosie kicked three goals from 16 disposals and seven marks.
Jonty Scharenberg was brilliant in defence with 31 disposals for the Bays while Corey Lyons (23 disposals) and Parnell (21 disposals) worked tirelessly.
West engineered a commanding 21-7 inside 50 count at the first change which ballooned to 36-18 at the half and 61-38 by the final siren.
Kobe Ryan racked up 31 disposals, seven clearances for the Bloods while Cade Kennedy (25 disposals) was also prominent.
Twin talls Tom Scully (three goals) and Ellem (two goals) were stretching the Tigers’ defence early while Parker and Judd Hansen were among the youngsters to display exciting signs for Westies.

Adelaide chalked up its first win of the Hostplus SANFL League season when it overan Central District by nine points at X Convenience Oval.
Trailing at every change, the Crows refused to roll over as they piled on four goals in the final term – while holding the Dogs to just 1.2 – to bank their first premiership points.
Down by eight points at three-quarter time, Matthew Wright’s charges hit the front when Chayce Jones snapped his second major under pressure in the 14th minute of the final term.
This led to a pair of eye-catching breakaway goals from emerging spearhead Tyler Welsh, who put the visitors up by as much as 16 points enetering time-on.
”He calls himself the man so he will be pretty happy with that today. It’s great that he got on the end of a few,” Hostplus Super Player of the Day Blake Drury said on Channel 7 of his Crows teammate Welsh.
Classy Central goalsneak Anzac Lochowiak kicked a contender for Channel 7 Goal of the Week when he span out of traffic to trim the lead to 10 points in the 26th minute.
But the Crows had done enough to hold on as they won the inside 50m count 46-37 and clearances 39-27.
Drury, who kicked the opening goal of the game with some nice run and carry, collected 24 disposals and nine marks while Jones was also influential with 24 disposals to go with his pair of majors.
Sid Draper had a strong last term with seven disposals and four clearances to give him 21 touches and a goal for the game while Reilly O’Brien was tireless in the ruck with 22 dispsoals, eight clearances and 42 hit outs.
Central’s star recruit Josh Fahey (26 disposals, nine marks) and West End State representative Luca Whitelum (26 disposals) couldn’t prevent their side from dropping to a 0-3 win-loss record.
Emerging tall forward Tallan Rosenzweig continued his nice development with a match-high three goals while the Lochowiak brothers Anzac (two goals) and Mihail (19 disposals) were lively.
