U18’s Match Report – Round 1

Round 1 saw us hosting Glenelg at our home ground, an exciting occasion to observe the debut of a new group in our first game of the season. Our trials had shown competence against the opposition we faced so we had a clear understanding of what we wanted to implement.

In the initial 10 minutes of the game, we displayed good intent but struggled to slow down the opposition enough to control stoppages and territory. However, as the quarter progressed, we managed to impose our game plan for significant periods leading us into quarter time with a score of 1.1 to 3.3.

The second quarter commenced similarly to the first, yet we fought admirably against the breeze, generating fast forward entries and tallying 5 scoring shots to their 4. We found ourselves trailing by three points at the main break with the score reading 3.4 to 3.7.

Moving into the third term, we continued to demonstrate our desired style of play with the wind, amassing 7 scoring shots to their 6, albeit only converting one into a goal. This left us trailing by 7 points at three-quarter time.

Unfortunately in the final quarter, we lost our forward structure allowing Glenelg ample time and space in transition between the arcs. Combined with the strong breeze, they capitalized on our lapses resulting in a disappointing blowout with the margin extending to 40 points.

Despite the outcome, notable performances from Hamish Dow and Lucas White on the wings, along with Noah Baker’s hard work in the forward line with 2 goals were highlights. Gus Downs and Fletcher Dillon showcased strong performances in the back half.

We now prepare to face the Eagles at home once more on Good Friday. We embrace the challenge and look forward to your support at the game.
