SANFLW League Match Report – Round 12

Round 12 was a big week for our Women’s program. It was our last game for season 2022, Breakthrough Mental Research Round and we also unfortunately had to farewell coach Mark Moody who announced his resignation early last week. Plenty on the line and plenty to play for at Maughan Thiem Oval.

We welcomed back a few younger players back to the team with Ruby Ballard and Sarah Campbell returning to our League side. We were also able to debut a recent code hopper, Michaela Lappin who fought hard in the ruck. Loyal defender Niamh Davis also made her return to league football after missing most of the season with an injury sustained back in Round 1.

Eagles came out of the game firing kicking the first 4 goals of the game, and the ultimately set up the rest of the day for our girls. To the credit of our girls, they continued to be competitive despite the wet weather but were unfortunately not able to keep up in the end ultimately falling short. We unfortunately weren’t able to make the most of our chances in front of goal but was lead valiantly by experienced forward Nicole Hooper who kicked both of our goals from strong contested marks in the last quarter.

Jess Macolino was a contested beast in the midfield picking up 26 disposals, 21 of which were contested. She was also added 10 clearances and 10 tackles and busted her guts out all day. Saraid Kustermann showed us how much she has improved in her first year of football and was damaging on the wing using her endurance and pace to her advantage. Asha Dufour in her first year of League football also tried her best all day and showed that she is going to be one to watch in the future.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t the end to the season we wanted, and we were disappointed that we couldn’t get one more win for our League coach in his last game. Again, we want to thank Moods for the tremendous amount of work he has done for our women’s program. He has left a lasting impact on the club and a foundation that we will continue to build upon in the coming years.

Finally, a big thank you to all our sponsors, families and fans that have supported us this year. We hope you know how much your support means to us and we promise that we will be back bigger and better next year.
