Moody’s Match Report – First Semi-Final

Last Updated:

Saturday night saw us head to Norwood Oval to tackle South in the first semi-final. We knew after last weeks last quarter from South they would come with confidence and believe they could beat us.

The game was even for most of the night, the last quarter was a thriller with the lead changing hands a couple of times, it was Westies who continue to send the ball into the fifty several times without putting any damage on the score board. For most of the last 10 minutes of the game the play was in our forward line, it wasn’t until the last 90 seconds of the game to go when there was a ball up in our goal square that Westies were able to hit the lead due to a snap shot from our FF Mel Elsegood. This goal gave us a 4 point lead which we were able to hold onto until the end, for the second year in row we have now made it through to the preliminary final.

Saturday night we had some outstanding performances, no more than our skipper Bec Owen, her leadership, hard running and long kicking was great to watch,. She was well supported by Abbie Ballard whose last quarter was sensational. Young guns Lauren Young and Zoe Venning had outstanding games. Chelsea Biddell was once again fantastic, she was always competing with 2 defenders. Our defenders did another amazing job, no more than in the third quarter, there continual pressure was sensational. Recruits Sarah Dargan & Sharnie Whiting again showed their class at different times throughout the night. AFLW player Ailish Considine played another great game and continued to win clearances and drive the ball forward, Saturday night’s game was the last for Ailish (Swish) this season as she heads home to Ireland for her sister’s wedding, we ALL would like to thank Swish for all efforts this year and look forward to her playing SANFLW with Westies next year.

We head back to Norwood Saturday at 11am to get ourselves into our first ever Grand Final, the current 2021 score with Norwood is 1 each, we know we can beat them we just need to do what we have done for the past 4 wins and know our best footy is better than theirs.
