Coming into Round 5, our mindset was clear it was to improve on our previous performance against the Eagles. We had to adjust our game plan with Tony and Josh out of the lineup, but our overall goal remained the same.
We got off to the perfect start, kicking the opening goal from the first possession. Unfortunately, we couldn’t maintain that momentum against the fast-moving, defending premiers, who piled on seven unanswered goals for the rest of the quarter.
In the second term, we managed to slow the game down and play it on our terms, containing them to just four goals. We also kicked our second goal, doubling our total from our last meeting with Woodville West Torrens, which was a positive step forward.
The third quarter presented some challenges, with a few decisions not going our way, and you could see frustration start to build. Despite the Eagles adding a couple late in the term, we competed strongly, matching them for most of the quarter and scoring two goals to their five.
At the 3/4 time break, seeing the team feeling a bit frustrated I asked the team to take a deep breath, stay calm, and stick to our game plan. It was great to see everyone buy in, leading to a strong final term where we were only outscored 28–19.
Although the final result was still an 80-point loss, the improvement from our first matchup was significant and that was our main objective. Over the past two weeks, it’s been clear how much this group is growing and how far we’ve come
