We were lucky enough to play during Gather Round in an under 18’s double header at Woodville Oval on Sunday morning.
In the first quarter, our opponents were able to get the game on their terms and benefited from fast play and gaining territory which we struggled to contain for the majority of the quarter and opened up a good break on the scoreboard. Again, as we’ve done in the previous two rounds we fought back through intent and collecting some good ground balls to get the ball going our way and scoring a late goal to finish the first quarter 2.1 to 4.4.
As the game progressed into the second and third quarters, the match remained relatively balanced. We struggled with some initial fumbling at the onset of each quarter, but gradually improved as the quarters unfolded. Despite falling behind by 28 points at the six-minute mark of the second quarter, we displayed resilience and managed to narrow the gap to within 10 points just before halftime. Unfortunately, we missed out on some opportunities for high percentage scores due to errors in executing fast plays.
In the fourth quarter, our team continued to fight, maintaining a similar level of intensity. Overall, our intent throughout the game was commendable. Once we established a defensive stance and applied frontal pressure, the game became more evenly matched. Despite the challenges we faced, particularly with fast plays, we demonstrated determination and resilience, ensuring a competitive performance.
Next week we face Central Districts at Hisense Stadium on Saturday following the under 14’s final Saturday fixture for their inaugural season and the under 16’s will be concluding the triple header at 2:10pm.
