On Good Friday the Under 16’s faced off against the Eagles in round 2 at Hisense Stadium looking to make-up for a disappointing start the week prior against Glenelg.
Like last week our boys started the match well narrowly trailing the Eagles by 2 points at quarter time and should have been in front, but unfortunately we were unable to capitalise on good ball movement and looks inside our forward 50.
It was the Eagles in the second quarter who dominated possession and their desire to run to support each other and get their hands on the ball first enabled them to hold a handy break while holding us goalless, ultimately proving the difference between the two teams at the end of the game.
A strong message was delivered to our boys at half time regarding our decision making, disposal efficiency and ultimately challenging their desire to want to win the contest. We needed a response!
The second half saw a significant change in attitude and method with a renewed appetite for the contest, allowing us to show a more consistent application seeing us in positive note win the second half 5.4 to 4.5. Unfortunately, we played catch up football after half time and went down to the eagles by 11 points. While we were happy to see the response from the boys after half time, it was an opportunity lost and a good reminder and learning opportunity that we need to engage and remain focused for the entire 96 minutes.
This weekend the Under 16’s Program has a week off due the Under 16’s Showcase Game that will be held on Saturday at Glenelg Oval. We look forward to our round 3 clash against Centrals on Saturday April 13.
