U16’s Coaches Report Rd 2 v Norwood

Round 2 – West Adelaide v Norwood.

West 12.4.76
Norwood 9.13.67

The excitement and anticipation were palpable as the Under 16 boys took to the field at Hisense Stadium for their opening round clash against Norwood. Following a strong preseason and trial form, the boys were eager to get the season underway under warm conditions. The game kicked off at a blistering pace, showcasing high-quality ball movement and relentless pressure from both teams.

The opening quarter saw a seesawing battle, with our team managing to kick a goal after the siren to trail Norwood by just one point. The second term brought a different dynamic, as Norwood upped the intensity and applied immense pressure, which tested our fundamentals and decision-making. Norwood capitalised on these moments to extend their lead to 29 points midway through the quarter. Despite the scoreboard pressure, the boys held their composure and responded with two late goals to head into the main break trailing by 17 points.
The third quarter marked a significant shift, as our lads wrestled control of the game. They moved the ball with greater method and connection, particularly with our forwards, and excellent defensive cohesion from our backs allowing us to kick four goals to Norwood’s single goal for the term. This impressive turnaround had us trailing by just two points at the final break, with a renewed sense of belief among the team.

Entering the final term, the boys carried momentum and confidence, knowing and feeling they had more run in their legs than Norwood. Within the first five minutes, we kicked three quick goals to claim a 16-point lead, breaking the spirit of the opposition in the process. Ultimately, the boys sealed a fantastic nine-point victory to kickstart the season on a positive note.

Across the board, we had strong contributions from all lines, but Lawrence Andriani stood out with an exceptional performance, amassing 41 possessions, 5 tackles, and 6 clearances. Percy Bourgoyne and Charlie Gurney also made a significant impact, each kicking three goals.
What was most pleasing about this match was the team’s resilience in the face of adversity. They stuck to their structures and processes, forcing errors from their opponents and building the result on a strong foundation of team culture. This is a quality we will undoubtedly rely on as the season progresses.

Next week, we travel to Noarlunga to take on South Adelaide, who are coming off their own opening round victory against North Adelaide.
