Match Report – Round 1 SANFL Reserves: West Adelaide FC vs Glenelg
West Adelaide 8.9.57
Glenelg 10.10.70
In my first game as Reserves Head Coach, it was a couple of last-minute goals that proved to be the difference in West Adelaide’s loss to Glenelg at Hisense Stadium. West Adelaide’s Lachlan Tredwell kicked the first of the match in what was an arm-wrestle first-quarter. Glenelg capitalised on their momentum and kicked three goals to close out the first term.
Captain Riley McMillan (19 disposals, 3 tackles, 1 goal) led from the front to take control of the contest in the second quarter, finding the ball with ease while Caleb May (28 hit outs, 14 disposals) gave the midfield more opportunities to win first possession and take thee game forward. Dylan White (20 disposals, 1 goal) kicked a long ball into the forward, setting up a Jonti Koehne (15 disposals, 2 goals) screamer and his first goal of the day.
After the half-time break, West dominated the third quarter, kicking four successive goals. Koehne and Tredwell each kicked their second for the day, and McMillan and White took their opportunities to open up a 7-point lead heading into the final break.
Dashing defender Charlie Haysman (20 disposals), emerging utility Jack Sullivan (23 disposals) and key back Liam Delahunty (15 disposals, 12 marks) continued to provide strong rebound and support throughout the match. However, Glenelg capitalised on some crucial errors to take the lead 8 minutes into the final term.
In a positive sign for the Reserves, West continued to push for a result as McMillan, Mooney (17 disposals) and Tyson Birss (16 disposals, 4 tackles) got busy. Tredwell and Baker both took advantage of West’s continual surges forward, restoring a 1-point lead at the 19-minute mark. Unfortunately, Glenelg forced two more turnovers and finished the game with final two goals, sealing a 2 goal win for the visitors.
West Adelaide will look to take another step forward in their development when it faces a red hot South Adelaide at Magain Stadium on Saturday 05 April, at 11:30 am.
