Round 18 saw us play our final home match of the season against Sturt. We had 8 changes to the side from the previous week with a combination of injury and some players going up to the league side which is always nice to see. We also welcomed Jordan Brown and Sam Burbridge from the U18 program, a nice insight to some players for future planning.
We started the game relatively well. Our contest and pressure was excellent and we were able to lock the ball in our half for much of the opening term, as we held a 6-point lead at the first change. The second quarter was an even battle for the most part but we unfortunately conceded 3 goals in the last 6 minutes of the quarter to trail by 14 points at half-time.
In the second half we weren’t able to gain control of the ball, largely as a result of our defensive cues not being quick enough. Sturt were able to move the ball around and their uncontested game was too quick for us. Our effort remained high all the way through but we have some work to do to ensure we are able to defend better which will then help our offensive game. In the end the final margin was 37 points.
Riley McMillan was judged our best on the day with 20 disposals, Tyson Coe had 24 touches and 9 tackles, while Lachlan Williams battled hard all day in defence. Jordan Brown kicked 2 goals in his first reserves match also which was a highlight.
We have a resilient group that have shown they are committed to improvement, and this will remain the case for the final week as we look to finish the season with a strong performance at Prospect. We hope to see you there.
