To finish up our 2023 season, we had the pleasure of travelling to X Convenience Oval to face the in form and finals bound Central District. Only two changes to the team this week, with Charlie Scutchings unavailable due to family reasons, replaced in the side by Emma Kilpatrick who returned from suspension. Chloe Tonkin unfortunately fell ill and was replaced in the side by Kendell Saffin.
Centrals were on the attack from the beginning, kicking the first 2 goals of the game which meant early on we were going to have to chase to get back into the game. The ship steadied after that and we were able to get the ball moving forward, not able to take advantage on the scoreboard with only 2 behinds managed for the first quarter.
The second quarter was much more even, we kicked the first goal of the quarter from a mark and set shot by Lauren Young. However only behinds were managed for both teams in the 2nd quarter and we went into half time down by only 4 points.
The 3rd quarter this week was the defining moment. Centrals came out and kicked the first 2 goals of the quarter within the first 5 minutes, again our girl’s manager to wrestle back momentum but Centrals kicked a 3rd goal for the quarter while Lauren Young was able to mark and kick a goal in the dying seconds of the 3rd for us to head into the last quarter 16 points down.
Despite a valiant effort we were no match for Centrals who again managed to kick one in the last and seal the fate of the game.
Despite the struggle of the season, with plenty of injuries we are all extremely proud of the effort our SANFLW team put in over the season. We showed that even with a young, developing group there were times where our best football was good enough and shows some very exciting signs for the program’s future.
Thank you to all the supporters, families and sponsors that stuck by us this year, we will continue to work and come back stronger in 2024.
