Coaches Report: Wheelchair League – Round 6

Coming into Round 6, we faced Norwood who had beaten us by 150 points in our last encounter. Our focus not only this week but in the last 2 rounds as well was to improve from our previous performances.

We started the game strong. The first quarter was one of our most competitive for the season. Our ball use was clean, and we made the most of our forward entries, which showed on the scoreboard. We finished the quarter only two goals behind, a huge improvement from last time.

Unfortunately, the second quarter was a step back. Trying to match Norwood’s pace led to rushed decisions and unnecessary turnovers, which they capitalised on. They kicked 6 goals to our 1 in that term, which proved costly.

The halftime break gave us a chance to reset. The second half saw us return to our strengths, slowing the game down and sticking to our game style. We were competitive again and matched them far better around the ground.

There are some really promising signs to take from the game. Most notably, we reduced the margin from 150 points to 67, a significant improvement. We had 14 scoring shots (7.7) to their 21 (19.2), showing we were in the contest and had opportunities.

One major discussion point for training will be our second quarter. That lapse gave Norwood the buffer they needed. Outside of that, we only lost the other three quarters by 7 goals.

Plenty of positives to build on as we move forward.
