Coaches Report – Final Trial Game v PAFC

Our final trial game against Port Adelaide was a significant opportunity to further refine our structures and game plan ahead of the 2025 season. We approached the match with a strong focus on consistency across each phase of the game and aimed to sustain intensity for longer periods of time.
For much of the first half, I felt we had the game shaping the way we wanted it to. The ball movement, our defensive pressure and contest work were all showing good signs, but unfortunately, we were unable to convert this into reward on the scoreboard. While the effort was there, we lacked the polish going forward that would have allowed us to make the most of our sustained periods of momentum.

There was a ten-minute period in the third term where we deviated from our offensive method. This, combined with some lapses in our defensive structures, particularly around stoppage, allowed Port Adelaide to apply scoreboard pressure. It’s a reminder that consistency across the entire game is vital, and we need to ensure that we stay disciplined in sticking to our game plan & structures, especially in moments where the opposition have momentum.

Despite the setback in the third term, I was pleased with how our players responded. We showed great character and resolve, particularly in the final quarter. The boys got to work on their contest, and we shaped the ground well offensively. This allowed us to outscore Port Adelaide five goals to one in the last term, clinching a 4-point victory to round out our trial games. This result is a positive way to finish the trials and sets us up with some momentum heading into Round 1.
While there are certainly plenty of areas for us to continue working on, the trials have given us some valuable lessons and insights into where we need to improve. Our focus moving forward will be on maintaining consistency across the four quarters and executing our game plan for longer. The squad is in good spirits, and the competition for spots is strong.
On Friday night, our reserves team showed promising signs as well, with many senior players performing strongly as they returned from injury and compromised preseasons. This depth will be crucial throughout the season, and it’s good to see some of our returning players find form and confidence heading into the season proper.

With Round 1 fast approaching, both players and coaches are looking forward to the start of the season. This weekend, our Reserves side will take on Glenelg, while the senior team faces Adelaide FC. We are excited to get the season underway and are determined for a strong start across both grades.
We would love to see as many loyal Bloods supporters as possible there to cheer us on. Your support is invaluable, and we know the players thrive on the energy and passion you bring to each game. Let’s make it a big turnout and show the competition what the Bloods are made of.
