West Adelaide Football Club’s Hannah Button has announced her retirement following an outstanding football career, including 30 SANFLW games in the red and black.
Button quickly made an impression, earning selection in West Adelaide’s SANFLW squad after an impressive first season of football in 2017. She made her League debut in Round 2 that season and wasted no time establishing herself as one of the competition’s premier players.
Her courage, professionalism and work ethic were on full display throughout 2018, culminating in Button becoming the second player to claim the SANFLW Medal. Her form was further recognised later that year when she was selected by the Adelaide Crows with Pick 53 in the 2018 AFLW Draft.
Button went on to play 39 AFLW games with Adelaide, highlighted by Premiership success in 2019 and again 2022 (Season 6), which she won alongside her sister, Rachelle.
Returning to West Adelaide for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, Button again made a significant impact. She earned State selection, representing South Australia in the inaugural State game against Western Australia in 2024, before featuring again in 2025 against Victoria.
Her 2025 season was particularly impressive, with teammates voting her in as Vice-Captain. She finished Runner-Up in the club’s Best and Fairest and etched her name into the record books with 24 tackles in Round 11. A SANFLW record.
West Adelaide Female Football Manager, Haydn Ward, said Button’s influence on the program extended far beyond her on-field performance.
“We have put a big focus on character over the last 12 months in our footy program and there are very few people who set the standard as consistently as Hannah has,” Ward said.
“Hannah is one of the genuinely good people. Her determination and love for the footy club has always been at the forefront of everything she does. While she will be missed, Hannah leaves the club in a far better position and will always have a home at West Adelaide.”
President Alison Surjan said Hannah contributed on and off field consistently.
“Hannah is the epitome of a genuine club person. Someone highly regarded because of her work ethic and on field performances but more importantly what she brings to club culture. Both from the playing group, and throughout the club’s membership, supporters, staff and for me personally, at Board level, Hannah has been an absolute pleasure to work with and have at the West Adelaide Football Club. I personally would like to thank her for everything she has brought to the club and wish her all the very best for her future, and reiterate that her footy home, and her footy family will always be here at Westies.”
