Presenting the 2023 leadership group for your West Adelaide Football Club women’s squad!
Madi Russell has been appointed Captain for the second year in a row with Bec Hansen voted in as Vice-Captain.
Jessica Macolino, Tiarna Harfield, Paris Francis, Milli Gentle and Nicole Hooper round out the leadership group.
The women’s squad had their final training session last night for 2022 and will have 2 weeks off before resuming for a big 2023 season.
We asked Madi a few questions regarding her appointment as captain and pre-season news.
How do you feel after being voted in as captain for the second year in a row?
“I feel very honoured to be voted in by the girls to lead the team again for the 2023 season. I had a lot of growth last year as a leader and I’m excited to build on this, with the great support of our fellow leadership group”.
What are you looking forward to the most for the 2023 season?
“The foundation we’ve built in pre-season with the mixture of experience and youth coming through. The inclusion of some really talented new recruits, makes me really look forward to seeing what we can accomplish in 2023”.
How has pre-season training been so far?
“We have worked really hard for the last couple months and there has been a big effort from the girls to improve. Alongside the tough trainings we’ve had the opportunities to bond as a collective too. We have a very knowledgeable coaching and strength and conditioning panel this year which has been great to learn and develop from”.
What are your thoughts on Bruce Dawes so far and his coaching?
“Bruce has brought a great attribute to our SANFLW program. His approach and demeanor has been well received by the girls. We’ve been able to learn a new style of footy, which is coming together really well”.
Which players have been lighting up the track and in for a big season?
“Everyone has been putting in the hard yards. It’s no secret that the return of Lauren Young and Bec Hansen (Owen) is pretty exciting. Players such as Tiana Fernandez, Paige Allan & Asha Dufour have been lighting up the track this preseason”.
Stay tuned for more exciting news for the women’s program in the new year as they get prepared for round 1 which starts on February 18.
