Round 7 was another important game for our SANFLW squad on the back of a couple of bad losses. This week we travelled to The Parade to play Norwood. This week we had a couple of forced changes, with Captain Madi Russell away for personal reasons, and we lost Ella Maxwell due to suspension. This allowed Emily Mableson to come back into the side after being named SA U16 MVP and saw Bec Hansen return to the League team.
Being a small oval, we knew that it was going to be a tight, contested game of footy, and we weren’t wrong. To the girl’s credit, they were relentless all game, have laid over 100 tackles for the game, with Hannah Button alone collecting 16 tackles.
It was a low scoring affair, with only 1 point being kicked up until quarter time. The game opened up in the 2nd quarter and we were able to score a couple of majors which helped us take the lead into half time. Goals to Bec Hansen off the wing and Lucy Boyd, normally a defender, sneaking forward to make the most off her opportunities after the half time siren.
The 3rd quarter was again a low scoring affair with again only 1 behind being scored, meant we needed to hold onto an 8-point lead heading into the final term. It didn’t look likely early, as Norwood kicked the first 2 goals of the final term to give them the lead half way through the last. Again, to our girls credit they fought until the end. Hannah Button gave us the lead again shortly after with Kendell Saffin sealing the deal late in the final quarter.
This win was important for setting up the 2nd half of the season, meaning we are currently 4 wins from 7 games and sitting a game clear in the Top 4. We know that there is still plenty of work to do and are hungry to be pushing for our first Finals campaign since 2021.
This week we will take on North Adelaide at Prospect Oval in our ANZAC Clash. The game has been scheduled for a 9:40am start.
