COACHES REPORT: U16/U18s

SANFL U18s – Round 13

West Adelaide (15.14.104) v Glenelg (13.6.84)

On Saturday, we travelled to Stratarama Stadium to take on Glenelg in Round 13. The weather was ideal for football, with a light breeze favouring the southern end, which we used to our advantage early.

We started strongly in the first quarter, bringing great effort and intensity from the opening bounce. Our ability to generate multiple scoring opportunities, particularly from high percentage areas, allowed us to build a handy lead by quarter time. It was a reward for how well the group brought their intent.

The second quarter was challenging into the breeze, and Glenelg responded with increased pressure. To our boys’ credit, they held firm, played the game on our terms for long periods, and were able to control the style of play. Unfortunately, we didn’t convert our chances in F50, but the way we were going about it gave the coaching group plenty of confidence heading into half time.

The third quarter was a real arm wrestle. The wind dropped, and Glenelg lifted their ball movement speed, catching us on the back foot with three quick goals straight out of centre bounce. It put us under the pump, but the group stayed connected, stuck to the task, and fought hard right to the siren. It showed a lot of character.

In the final term, it was pleasing to see the boys regain control and generate repeat entries. We had the better of the quarter and created some really good chances, which came off the back of consistent effort. It was a positive finish and a strong way to close out the game.

Hamish Illman had his best performance as a defender, consistently halting Glenelg’s ground ball chains and driving us forward. Lincoln Pitt continued his strong form, especially in the air, and was a key contributor again. Joe Raphael played an important role up forward, applying pressure all game. Beyond that, it was a very even team performance, with most players playing their roles well and contributing to the result.

We now turn our attention to the Jake Watson Shield match against Eagles this Friday at 4pm at Hisense Stadium. A day where we honour the boys no longer with us, who will always remain part of the West Adelaide family. Families will be joining us, and we look forward to making it a meaningful day for everyone involved.

See you there.

U16s – Round 13

West Adelaide (13.6.84) Vs Glenelg (3.13.31)

Venue: Stratarama Stadium

Coming off a strong win against ladder leaders Central District last week, our Under 16s faced a determined Glenelg side at Stratarama Stadium on Saturday. With Glenelg eager to break into the top four and replace us, the stakes were high. We were also motivated to atone for our previous encounter, where we surrendered a 22-point halftime lead to lose by two points against the Bays in Round 8.

Fielding a strong side for the second consecutive week, we started with intent, applying pressure to Glenelg’s ball carriers and forcing turnovers. Our forward pressure and clean ball movement helped us dominate territory and take an 18-point lead into the first break. The second quarter was more of an arm wrestle, with both sides enjoying periods of control. However, we made the most of our opportunities, kicking 3.2 to Glenelg’s 1.4, extending our lead to 28 points at halftime. The halftime message was clear: remember the last time we were in this position and ensure we didn’t let it slip.

The third term was arguably our best defensive quarter of the season. Through relentless pressure, teamwork, and a willingness to run and support, we kept Glenelg goalless while piling on five goals ourselves. This dominant display gave us a commanding 57-point lead heading into the final term.

In the last quarter, we played smart, controlled football, managing the game and protecting our lead. With both sides registering just one goal each, we ran out comfortable 53-point winners. We also strategically managed our Under 16 State representatives, resting and rotating them ahead of their upcoming commitments on the Gold Coast.

It was pleasing to see our system and processes executed consistently across four quarters. The result was a well-rounded team performance, highlighted by eight different goal kickers, showcasing the depth and versatility of our midfield and forward line and supported by strong defensive action of backs!

We now turn our attention to a short turnaround, facing the Eagles at home this Friday night.
