League Match Report – Round 16

We ventured out to Flinders University Stadium on Saturday to take on South Adelaide. We expected a strong contest and understood the importance of starting the game well.

We kicked the first goal of the game through late-inclusion Luke Redfern, replacing Jye Sinderberry who will miss the remainder of ’24 due to an injury to his finger he sustained on Thursday night leading into the game. The rest of the first quarter was a grind – we had opportunity to impact the scoreboard, but often chose to kick the ball sideways and shallow inside our F50 or wide (4 times we kicked the ball out on the full).

The second and third terms were scrappy as both teams were eager to walk away with a positive result. Again, we had generated enough turnovers to go forward and score, but through poor decisions and skill execution, squandered opportunity.

Rain came in the third term and with all South Adelaide’s goals coming from turnover up until three quarter time, we as Coaches felt it necessary to equalize numbers forward of stoppage in the last quarter whilst also generating support behind the ball. Unfortunately, this tactical change didn’t pay off as South were able to generate two goals from stoppage in the final term. We were under pressure late in the game to get ahead on the scoreboard and as was the pattern of the day, we made some poor errors with ball in hand, turning the ball over twice in D50 leading to opposition goals.

Well done to Luke Redfern who looked dangerous in the front half, finishing with 3 goals. And to Will Patton and Liam Delahunty who played some great footy for us down back.

Full credit to Jarrad Wright and South Adelaide as they have clearly improved in terms of their system and organization since our encounter earlier in the season.

We will continue to work hard as we prepare for an important game against Adelaide at Adelaide Oval as we honor the great Neil Kerley on Sunday the 11th of August.

Best: Liam Delahunty, Wyatt Ryan, William Patton
