In 1892 The West Adelaide Football Club was established in and subsequently joining the SANFL in 1897.

To celebrate our history over 126 years, the WAFC will select a Team Of The Centuries since incorporation.

There has been a total of 1404 players play league football for the WAFC and selecting the team was a massive task. A selection committee was nominated which included Neil Kerley, Brian Faehse, Grant Fielke, Bob Loveday, David Tidswell, Doug Thomas and Lee Harradine.

Mark Beswick (non voting) WAFC Historian provided statistical assistance and player profiles. He has access to all details of the players who have been inducted into the WAFC Hall of Fame.

Graeme Barton (non voting) coordinated the selection process which was completed on 30/9/2017.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

A check of other SANFL clubs who have selected teams of the century reveals that a player would have to play 50 league games or more for the WAFC to be selected.

Of the 1404 players to play league football 280 have played over 50 games.

Players should be selected for the position they “normally” played.

The selection committee would initially select the top 50 players from the 280 players who have played 50 or more league games.

This will eliminate several players who played under 50 games before going to the AFL, Riccuito, Cooney, Dangerfield, Modra, Rehn, Edwards, Fisher, etc.

To celebrate this announcement we will be holding a ‘Team of the Centuries’ dinner held at Adelaide Oval. Please see the save the date below for more information.
