Coaches Report Preseason Week 1

Preseason commenced last week with a host of new players, coaches and support staff. The theme for preseason is ‘raising the bar’ and the players spent the first session discussing what this will look like over the summer. Wednesday night saw players complete fitness testing under the watchful eye of new Strength & Conditioning Coach, Todd Carr. Todd joins the club after time spent with the South Adelaide FC Centre of Excellence program. Players at the front of the pack included Teejay Halkias, Kenny Karpany, Todd Lockwood (former Glenelg junior), Jack Agostino and Lachlan Peter. Overall, the times were satisfactory, however considerable improvement will be expected in the coming months. The majority of the playing group is in full training which is pleasing. Notable absentees include Josh Holliday and Joe Bottin (both recovering from hip surgery) and Hugh Haysman who is recovering from a significant wrist injury. Unfortunately, it is expected that Hugh will have a delayed start to season 2018. Pleasingly, Daniel Webb’s recovery from his ankle injury is on track and he is completing the majority of the sessions. We currently have five weeks of training prior to the Christmas break. The focus for this period is on fitness, strength and skill development. These represent the foundations for successful football.

We currently have a list of 75 players completing preseason. This includes a group of players transitioning from our underage program into senior football, and a host of new players from outside the club. Andre Parrella (Sturt) and Lyndon Hupfeld (Norwood) have both presented in strong physical condition whilst Matt Eastman (East Coast Eagles in Sydney) has also fitted in seamlessly.

The coaching team also has two new members; Brent Frewen and Ben Yeomans. Brent enjoyed a distinguished playing career, including over 100 games with Woodville-West Torrens and AFL experience with Richmond and Fitzroy. Brent is a natural leader and comes with previous assistant coaching experience in amateur and country football. Ben represented both South Adelaide and Port Adelaide in his playing career. In addition to his football knowledge, Ben works in athletic development and has also spent time in the defence force. We will be drawing upon Ben’s unique experience in both teamwork and individual development. We are currently in the process of recruiting a new Development Team coach, which we expect to confirm in the coming weeks.

The majority of our training sessions are conducted at Richmond Oval, with main sessions on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. All supporters are most welcome to attend the session!
