Condolences to the Agars Family

The WAFC would like to express our deepest condolences to the Agars family on the passing of past player and club legend Merve Agars.

Merve was a former player of the WAFC as well as a Journalist, and author of the 1987 book ‘Bloods Sweat & Tears’

At the invitation of Don Taylor, Merve was recruited to West Adelaide as a country player in 1944 after playing in a West-Glenelg preseason trial game at the Adelaide Oval. He played 106 league games for the club in a seven season career form 1946 to 1952. He was a member of the clubs 1947 premiership team and represented the state 7 times in the years 1948 – 49 – 50. He retired from league football at the age of 27 to take up a career in sports journalism. He was appointed Sports Editor of The Advertiser in 1967, a position that he held for 19 years.
