It’s only seems like yesterday that our U/18 squad won the 2014 SANFL U/18 Macca’s Cup premiership. The reality is this was just over 9 weeks ago since this occurred and last night it was time for the U18’s squad to commence pre-season for yet another year.

It’s only seems like yesterday that our U/18 squad won the 2014 SANFL U/18 Macca’s Cup premiership. The reality is this was just over 9 weeks ago since this occurred and last night it was time for the U18’s squad to commence pre-season for yet another year.

The U/18 Centre of Excellence squad and the coaching staff have returned to the training track and yet again we have another group of talented young players that together will combine to represent the West Adelaide Football Club in Season 2015. The aim of this group, like it is every year, is for as many of these boys to play senior footy as soon as possible and to go on to have a long prosperous career at the Bloods.

This year’s squad will initially hover around the 60 mark (which is much larger than we normally have) meaning the fight for positions in our final squad will be much tougher than in previous years. The larger size is because of a number of reasons. The new SANFL re-zoning has seen a number of players who were previously at other SANFL clubs but delisted approach us seeking a fresh opportunity to pursue their elite football pathway. There are numerous players from our 2 new re-zoned local clubs (Flinders Park and Fitzroy) who are also joining us in 2015. Most encouragingly we have had a high number of country based players who have accepted their invite to undertake a U/18 pre-season and are making the journey down from the Riverland and the Mallee regions to be a part of the training. For these reasons we have assembled what at this stage appears to be a very strong U/18 squad once again.

Almost 20 players from our last season’s U/18 squad were recommended to train (and have in fact begun training) with the seniors during pre-season. These players were identified and promoted because they had either already played Senior Football last season or the football department think they will play senior football at West Adelaide in the first part of season 2015. Around 10 of these boys who are training with the senior group could still play U/18 footy again in 2015 which is a great reflection of the depth and strength our Centre of Excellence program provides for the football club.

Each of our committed and qualified U18 coaching staff remain on board and this has been topped up with a new conditioning coach at U18 level, Andrew Beck, who was unleashed on the group last night and will no doubt have the group fitter and stronger than the premiership squad from last season. Our medical staff in 2015 will be headed up by Georgia Liubinas (Head Trainer), along with Tim Glazebrook (Physio) and of course Angela Moran (Doctor).

Whilst it is nice to experience some success at U18 level, clubs do not survive on U18 premierships. Rather, it is of vital importance that we promote as many of our U18 squad members into the senior program as soon as we think they are ready so that it both supports and puts pressure on the players up above.

The U18 Centre of Excellence squad will train 3 times a week at City Mazda Stadium – Tuesday 6pm, Thursday 6pm and Saturday 8:30am leading in to Christmas.
